Delta Fibre Network
Delta owns and operates a fibre optic network providing next generation broadband access to businesses, schools, local government, tertiary institutes and the health sector in Dunedin.
Delta Fibre Network connected its first customer in 2008 as an unlit, or Layer 1, service. Working in conjunction with retail service providers, the network offers speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second. Average broadband speeds in New Zealand are around 3 megabits per second.
In building the network, Delta uses trenchless directional drilling to install the cable underground. Fibres are then blown through the hollow ducting using compressed air. The method reduces the need to dig up roads and paths and ensures minimal disruption in busy urban environments.
